Cranial Osteopathy
Cranial osteopaths or osteopaths
in the cranial field can feel a
subtle, rhythmical shape change that is present in all body tissues
including the cranial bones. This is called 'involuntary movement'. By
working with this involuntary movement, structural stresses and strains
can be identified and released whilst also improving the individual's
state of health. Stresses and strains can accumulate over a long period
of time, even from birth. The body is all the time doing its best to
deal with these past stresses but then if it really cannot cope anymore
then symptoms can occur.
Osteopaths may have
different specialities including sports injuries,
paediatrics, visceral (treatment on organs) but cranial
osteopathy encompasses all of these. It is
appropriate and safe treatment for people of all ages
from babies to the very elderly with acute and chronic
problems. The advantage of
working this way is that it accurately identifies and
safely treats deep stresses and
strains within the body. It relies wholly on the body's natural
and intelligent inclination toward self-healing to reach
a healthy equilibrium and resulting homeostasis.
It is a very gentle way of treating a wide variety of problems or
pain which might reside in any part of the body including the head. Because it is so gentle
the patient can usually not feel anything at all. However, this does not
mean that nothing has been achieved and often the benefits of the
treatment can be felt immediately after the treatment or are felt several days. Immediately after a treatment the
patient might feel unusually tired or, conversely, very energetic.
This is my preferred
form of treatment
as I find a
successful programme gives long-term benefits and the
advantage of this approach over more vigorous and
manipulative forms is that it respects the body’s
ability to heal itself in its own time by supporting it
in this process. |
